The Octagon This Generation’s Boxing Ring

A lot changes over the generations when it comes to the online sports betting forums in which players spend most of their time, and one such transition has been from boxing to Mixed Martial Arts over the past decade. Once considered one of the premier sports because of its colorful characters, improbable upsets, and the aura that surrounded it through the mid 1900’s, boxing has lost its shine, taken over by the fastest rising sport in the world, MMA and the it has been creating more interesting news bytes than the contemporary boxing news.

There are many reasons for the transition, as well as many differences between the boxing and MMA betting worlds, but none is bigger than the forum in which the sport is carried out. Unlike boxing, where a ring is used for the fighters to face off, MMA requires a cage or what the Ultimate Fighting Championship has trademarked as the “Octagon”. While the boxing ring is a simply square shape with ropes on all four sides that connect on a turnbuckle in the four corners, the octagon is an eight-sided cage that combatants can’t escape from. The walls are made of metal chain-link that is coated with black vinyl for the protection of the fighters, and it sits four feet above the ground on a raised platform. The top of the fence is protected with padding, and stands at the height of many fighters. Unlike in boxing where fighters against the ropes are called back to the middle of the ring, the octagon is usually used in MMA as a way for fighters to get an advantage.
